Sometimes you have to put up or shut up…

Picture the scene – just as I sat down for an intense morning of email tennis, the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team called with a unique challenge. Was I the only journalist brave/daft enough to go head-to-head with star player Danny McGuire in their pre-season fitness test? My first instinct was to tell them they had dialled the wrong number. After all, here was a test designed to mercilessly show up the weaknesses of pro-athletes, built both for bone-crunching impacts and blistering speed. It all sounded about as good for my ego as a free-running competition with a spider monkey. But then it hit me: why invest time, sweat and money in an active, challenging lifestyle if you shy away from real tests of how successful you’re being?

The test, as it turns out, was every bit as heartless as I expected, but it delivered some revealing insights on how balancing your strengths can be a short cut to progress. Turn to page p16 to see how I got on and find out how to test your own strengths, pinpoint your weaknesses and improve on them for fast-track fitness.
