It’s not the quantity – it’s the intensity…

When it comes to life lessons, I don’t really expect to be schooled in the gym. It’s usually where I know the form and feel a comforting level of control – lift the weight, lower the weight. Simple! But after taking on the latest HFM fitness challenge, I’m starting to wonder if my comfort zone has got a bit too comfortable lately…

If you’re a gym-goer, chances are you’ve witnessed the latest fitness class revolution – high intensity interval training (HIIT). They have names like Insanity and GRIT, are run by PTs with energy levels off the charts, and are set to the most banging of tunes. It’s a sweat-fest, basically, but the benefits of HIIT mean you can get fitter and burn fat more effectively, and in less time than steady cardio workouts.

So I decided to take on three HIIT classes in a day, from heavy weightlifting to high-powered aerobics, to see which was King Of The Gym. In the process, I pushed myself harder to lift a weight than ever before. It turns out, that all those times I thought I was working my hardest I was holding back slightly, still with one foot in my comfort zone. Life lessons don’t come easy but this one was worth it – see p21.
